Chiropractic Care and Asthma: Evidence, Limits and Medical Safety
Updated: Oct 19

Chiropractic manipulation is not an established treatment for asthma and should not be presented as an alternative to prescribed inhalers. Asthma affects the airways and requires an individualized medical plan, including what to do when symptoms worsen.
What the evidence does not establish
The fact that nerves influence breathing does not show that routine spinal misalignment causes asthma or that adjustments correct its cause. Evidence for relief of some muscle or joint symptoms cannot be extended to treatment of airway inflammation.
The original article referred to studies without enough detail to verify its claims. Those claims should not be used to promise improved lung function in children or adults. Discuss evidence for any proposed asthma treatment with your medical clinician.
Keep symptom control and an action plan central
Follow your asthma plan and use prescribed medicines as directed. Ask your healthcare professional to review inhaler technique, symptom frequency, triggers and what changes require urgent care.
Do not reduce or stop controller or reliever treatment because of an adjustment or a testimonial. Any medication change belongs with the clinician managing your asthma.
Where separate musculoskeletal care may fit
A person with asthma can also have back or neck pain. A suitable musculoskeletal assessment may address that separate problem, but it should not be described as treating asthma or reducing airway inflammation.
Tell every treating clinician about asthma, medicines and recent attacks. Ask how advice about activity or other care will fit your medical action plan and whether coordination is needed.
Safety applies to all treatments
Manipulation is not risk-free. Temporary soreness or headache may occur, and rare serious complications have been reported. Calling a treatment natural or non-drug does not make it safer than medically indicated asthma treatment.
Severe difficulty breathing, difficulty speaking because of breathlessness, blue or gray lips, confusion or symptoms not responding to the rescue plan requires emergency help. Call 911; do not wait for a chiropractic appointment.
A practical next step
If asthma limits activity or disrupts sleep, arrange a medical review of control and treatment. Bring questions about any complementary approach before trying it. This article is education, not an asthma treatment recommendation.
For a separate muscle or joint concern, ask Haywood Spine and Nerve Center about an appropriate evaluation at 136 Waynesville Plaza, Suite 1, Waynesville, NC 28786; call (828) 456-5700. Asthma symptoms belong with your medical team.
