Seasonal Allergies and Chiropractic: Evidence, Limits and Safety

Chiropractic adjustments are not an established treatment for seasonal allergies. Sneezing, itchy eyes and nasal symptoms should be assessed and managed with appropriate allergy care, particularly when symptoms are persistent or asthma is also present.

  • Spinal and immune claims: Routine spinal misalignment has not been established as the cause of seasonal allergies. Adjustments should not be promised to correct an allergic immune response.

  • Inflammation claims: An improvement in neck or back comfort does not show that airway or nasal allergic inflammation has been treated.

  • Lymph and detox claims: Adjustments have not been shown to flush allergens or toxins through the lymphatic system. Allergy management should be based on the relevant trigger and evidence for the proposed treatment.

Evidence for relief of some muscle or joint pain does not show that manipulation treats allergic inflammation or reduces the need for allergy medicines. Do not stop prescribed treatment because of an adjustment. A medical clinician or pharmacist can discuss suitable symptom treatment and when allergy testing or specialist care may be useful.

For an unrelated muscle or joint concern, contact Haywood Spine and Nerve Center at (828) 456-5700, 136 Waynesville Plaza, Suite 1, Waynesville, NC 28786. Allergy symptoms belong with your medical team.

Complementary approaches and urgent symptoms

Discuss supplements or other complementary approaches before using them. “Natural” does not mean safe, and evidence varies. If nasal saline irrigation is recommended, follow safe-water and device-cleaning instructions rather than using untreated tap water.

Trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness or a rapidly worsening allergic reaction may be anaphylaxis. Use prescribed epinephrine as directed and call 911 immediately. Do not wait for a chiropractic appointment or rely on an antihistamine alone for a severe reaction.
