Technology: A Real Pain in the Neck

Sure, you might call work related emails in the middle of the night a “pain in your neck.” But for some people, they cause a literal pain in the neck. Enter: Tech neck.

Tech neck is an informal name for neck discomfort associated with prolonged device use. It is not a separate diagnosis, and pain does not necessarily mean that your spine is damaged.

If you spend hours of your day hunched over a screen or sitting behind a desk, this blog is for you.

How Tech Neck Happens

Looking down or holding one position for a long time can feel tiring. Device use, workload, sleep and individual sensitivity may all contribute. Mechanical load estimates do not tell you whether an individual’s neck is injured.

How to Correct Your Posture

Aim for a comfortable setup and regular changes of position rather than one rigid perfect posture. Adjust the device and seat to the task, your vision and your body.

Step 1: Position the screen where you can view it comfortably without prolonged bending. Support your arms when holding a device; placing a phone at eye level without arm support may tire the shoulders.

Step 2: Use a supportive chair, keep feet supported and place the keyboard and mouse within easy reach. Adjust seat and desk height to you rather than forcing one exact joint angle.

Step 3: Take brief, regular breaks to move and vary your position. Choose a reminder that fits the workday. Comfortable movement is useful; do not force a painful stretch.

Get emergency assessment for neck pain after significant trauma, fever with a stiff neck, new weakness or difficulty walking. Severe worsening neck pain also needs prompt medical assessment. Call 911 for sudden severe headache, facial droop, trouble speaking or new one-sided weakness. These symptoms need emergency assessment rather than a routine chiropractic visit.

For non-emergency persistent neck discomfort questions in Waynesville, contact Haywood Spine and Nerve Center at (828) 456-5700, 136 Waynesville Plaza, Suite 1. Ask whether an assessment, appropriate musculoskeletal care or medical referral fits your symptoms. Ask the clinic how to share medical information securely.

For workstation ideas, see OSHA’s computer-workstation guide. Seek assessment for ongoing pain, radiating symptoms, numbness or weakness.
