Chiropractic Care for Golfers: Managing Pain and Returning to Play

Chiropractic may be considered for some golf-related back or neck pain, but an adjustment cannot guarantee a better swing or a lower score. First identify what hurts and why it may need assessment.

Which part of golf brings on the pain?

Pain during the backswing, after repeated range sessions or while carrying clubs gives different clues. Note recent increases in play, changes in equipment and whether symptoms affect activities away from golf.

A swing problem is not automatically a spinal problem

Back, shoulder, hip, elbow and wrist symptoms can arise from different tissues. Golfer’s elbow, for example, involves tendons around the inner elbow. A movement assessment and, when appropriate, medical or physical-therapy input are more useful than assuming a small misalignment explains everything.

A practical return-to-golf checklist

- Warm up with comfortable movement and start with easier swings rather than immediately hitting at full effort.

- Reduce practice that reproduces pain and increase volume gradually as symptoms and function permit.

- Build strength and mobility around the diagnosed problem; a golf professional can separately help with technique.

- Review how you carry or move equipment and whether a lighter load or cart helps you avoid a painful demand.

Do not play through a significant injury

Stop and seek assessment for sudden severe pain, marked swelling, new weakness or symptoms after a fall. Temporary symptom relief does not establish that an injury has healed or that a full round is safe.
