Chiropractic vs. Physical Therapy: What’s the Difference?
Updated: Oct 19
Chiropractors and physical therapists can both help with musculoskeletal problems, and their methods overlap. The most useful choice depends on your diagnosis, goals and the clinician’s relevant experience.
Compare the plan, not just the professional title
A label alone does not tell you whether a visit will focus on exercise, hands-on care, education or another approach. Ask what the proposed treatment is meant to change and how progress will be checked.

How the approaches commonly differ
Chiropractic care often includes spinal manipulation and assessment of joints and muscles. Physical therapy commonly emphasizes movement, strength and functional rehabilitation, and may also include manual therapy. Either approach can include exercise and advice; neither should promise a cure for every condition.
Questions for either clinician
- What does the examination suggest, and is this a condition you regularly assess and manage?
- What are the expected benefits, risks and alternatives? If manipulation is proposed, ask about non-thrust options too.
- What will I practice between visits, and how will the plan help me return to work, sport or daily tasks?
- What are the expected costs and reassessment point, and how will you communicate with my other clinicians?
Some symptoms need medical care first
Recent major trauma, progressive weakness, fever or unexplained symptoms may need medical evaluation rather than choosing between rehabilitation providers. Emergency bladder or bowel changes with back pain or groin numbness need emergency assessment.
Ask about a coordinated plan locally
Haywood Spine and Nerve Center is at 136 Waynesville Plaza, Suite 1, Waynesville, NC 28786. Call (828) 456-5700 to ask about an evaluation and appropriate referral. Emergency symptoms need emergency care.
Care can be complementary when clinicians coordinate goals and avoid unnecessary duplication. Ask about referral if your needs fall outside the provider’s scope.
