Beyond Adjustments: Building Sustainable Fitness Habits
Updated: Oct 19

Sustainable fitness starts with a routine you can repeat. You do not need spinal adjustments to become active; if pain limits movement, an assessment can help you choose an appropriate starting point.
Set a specific, achievable goal: Choose an activity, a manageable duration and a realistic schedule. A short walk three times this week may be a better starting point than a fixed race deadline.
Find activities you enjoy: Explore different fitness options like hiking, dancing, swimming, team sports, or even yoga. Discover what sparks your passion and makes you look forward to moving your body.
Enjoy the outdoors safely: Adapt plans to weather, air quality, footing and sun exposure. Indoor activity is a good alternative when conditions are unsuitable.
Focus on manageable progress: More comfortable movement or repeating a short session can count. Avoid large increases simply to chase a milestone.
Buddy up or join a group: Partnering with friends or joining a fitness class can boost accountability, make exercise more enjoyable, and provide a supportive community.
Fuel your body wisely: Nourish your body with balanced meals and snacks to provide the energy you need for workouts. Choose whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins for optimal performance and recovery.
Manage stress: Relaxation, enjoyable activities or qualified support may help. A difficult day does not mean you have failed, and exercise intensity can be adjusted.
Prioritize recovery and sleep: Keep a regular sleep routine and allow easier days as needed. Persistent fatigue or sleep problems deserves assessment.
Start with one small commitment, such as a comfortable walk on selected days, and choose a time to review it. Chiropractic may be an option for a specific musculoskeletal concern, but it is not a way to unlock everyone’s fitness potential or a substitute for progressive activity.
Haywood Spine and Nerve Center is at 136 Waynesville Plaza, Suite 1, Waynesville, NC 28786. Call (828) 456-5700 to ask about an evaluation and appropriate referral. Emergency symptoms need emergency care.
For many adults, the activity goal is at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week plus strength work on two days, but some activity is better than none. Increase gradually and get advice when a condition or injury limits you.
