Chiropractic Care for Children: Evidence, Questions and Safety

Children do not automatically need spinal adjustments as they grow. Evidence for chiropractic treatment of many childhood complaints is limited, and a child’s symptoms should first be assessed appropriately.

Start with the specific concern

Back pain after sport, a limp, infant feeding difficulty and recurrent infections are different problems. They should not be grouped together as signs of spinal misalignment.

What parents should know about the evidence

Benefits observed in adult back-pain studies cannot simply be assumed for infants or children. NCCIH reports that evidence for many complementary approaches in children is not strong enough to establish what works, and rare serious complications have been associated with spinal manipulation.

Questions before considering any manual treatment

- Has the child’s pediatric clinician assessed persistent symptoms and ruled out problems that require medical care?

- What evidence supports the proposed approach for this child’s age and specific condition?

- What are the risks and alternatives, including exercise, observation or referral without manipulation?

- How will response be assessed, and will treatment be stopped or reconsidered if there is no meaningful improvement?

Medical and preventive care remain essential

Do not use chiropractic as a replacement for vaccinations, well-child visits or treatment of asthma, infection or developmental concerns. A child with fever and unexplained pain, weakness, an abnormal gait or symptoms after significant injury needs medical assessment.

Discuss the right care route
