Instrument-Assisted Chiropractic Adjustments: Uses, Limits and Questions
Updated: Oct 19
An instrument-assisted adjustment uses a handheld device to apply a controlled mechanical impulse. It is one way to deliver manual care, not proof that treatment is safer or more effective for every patient.
Ask about the method, not just the device
Different instruments and techniques are used for different purposes. The name of a device does not tell you whether it is appropriate for osteoporosis, nerve symptoms, pregnancy or a recent injury.

What benefits are reasonable to discuss?
Evidence for spinal manipulation relates mainly to selected musculoskeletal pain conditions. It should not be generalized into claims that an instrument restores whole-body nerve function or treats organ disease. A smaller or lower-force treatment still needs an appropriate examination.
Questions to ask before an instrument is used
- What condition is being treated, and why is this technique suitable for my medical history?
- What benefit should we look for, and how does it compare with exercise, mobilization or other options?
- What side effects or warning symptoms should I watch for, and can the plan be changed if I am uncomfortable?
- What are the costs and reassessment point, and what happens if there is no meaningful improvement?
Safety still depends on the person
Tell the clinician about fractures, osteoporosis, cancer, surgery, blood thinners and new neurological symptoms. Temporary soreness can occur after manipulation, and serious complications have been reported rarely. A device should not be described as risk-free.
Discuss technique preferences in Waynesville
Haywood Spine and Nerve Center is at 136 Waynesville Plaza, Suite 1, Waynesville, NC 28786. Call (828) 456-5700 to ask about an evaluation and appropriate referral. Emergency symptoms need emergency care.
Ask the office which techniques are currently available. This explanation does not establish that a particular instrument is used by the clinic or appropriate for you.
